What a script editor does

Fabiola MercadanteUseful infoWhat a script editor does

a role that is often misunderstoodp. 3/4

A script editor doesn’t rewrite someone else’s text and doesn’t judge it. They understand what that text is trying to do, and clear away whatever is stopping it. It is a craft of reading before it is a craft of writing.

What they do, concretely

They read. Then they write a note: where the text loses the reader, which mechanism makes it lose them, and what routes there are to put it back on its feet. With page references, because a note you can’t find again in the text is useless.

Then you talk about it. A reader’s note is the start of a conversation, not a verdict: half the observations turn out to be wrong as soon as the author explains what they had in mind, and that half is useful anyway, because it shows where the text isn’t saying what it thinks it is saying.

How they differ from a co-writer

A co-writer writes. A script editor doesn’t: they only touch the text if asked, and only as far as they are asked.

It is a difference worth putting in writing before starting, because “give me a few notes” and “fix it for me” are two different jobs, with two different timelines and two different prices.

When it is worth having it read

When you can no longer see the text. It happens to everyone after the third draft: you read what you meant to write instead of what is on the page.

When something doesn’t work and you can’t find where. The problem is often not where you feel it: you feel it at scene forty, the cause is at scene twelve.

Before sending it out, not after. You only send a script to the same person once.

What they can’t do

They can’t make someone like a script they wouldn’t like anyway, and they can’t guarantee it gets produced: that decision depends on money, timing and opportunities that have a weaker link to the quality of the writing than they should.

What they can do is make sure that, when someone reads it, the script is the best version of itself. The rest isn’t craft, it’s luck.
